Using the SHIFT + ENTER for <BR> tag

In this quick lesson I'll just mention one tip that can condense the HTML code that Dreamweaver creates.

If you are in the 'Design' view of Dreamweaver, and you hit 'Enter', the text prompt will skip to the next row. However, this will also create <p></p> code within your HTML which is sometimes unecessary. (The <p> tag defines a paragraph.)

Personally, I prefer to use the <br> tag which just creates a line break.

You can do this by holding down the shift key while pressing Enter.

It is a small difference, but it can make your HTML code smaller, neater, and less confusing if you have to edit a little bit of it by hand at some point.

If you prefer to use the <p> tags, stick with them...maybe there is some strange benefit I am unaware of. But if you try it out, you will see what I mean.

Dreamweaver is fantastic at creating the HTML code for webpages, and rarely creates sloppy or extra uneeded code (like FrontPage does).

However, it is a pretty good skill to know the basics of HTML just in case you need to go in and make a change here or there every so often, and so that you can understand what's going on with your webpages, even if you have a WYSWYG editor.

My step by step HTML videos can teach you the basics of HTML fast with work along samples.
