Creating A Developement Folder In Dreamweaver

In the last lesson we covered setting up a web site profile in Dreamweaver.

In this lesson I want to briefly tell you about a useful way to set up a developement folder on your server.

Often times when you are creating a website, you will need to experiment with how pages look before you want the public to see them.

However, you may need to upload them to a live web server to see how they really look (especially if you have CSS code, scripts, and/or PHP in the site)

But, if people are visiting your site, it is obviously better if they don't see your site under developement...Right?

Well, there is a simple work-around.

On your webserver, you can create a folder called something like 'developement' or just 'dev' so that you can test out web pages.

And, while working on it, you can go into your site profile in the 'Remote Tab'

Where is says host directory, you can change that to something like /httpdocs/developement/

This way, all files, will, by default be uploaded to that folder.

This way you can work for hours developing your site and testing it out live by visiting www.yourwebsitedomainname.com/developement/webpage.html

When you site looks the way you want it to, you can simply switch the profile so that files upload to your home web directory, and upload the files again there.

This is a simple but very useful way to develope websites using Dreamweaver.

I will also mention: It is useful to have the keyboard shortcut:

Ctrl + Shift + U

This can be used to upload webpages directly from your workspace without having to switch to the FTP screen...It can save a lot of time if you are constantly uploading and testing out webpages.

This is all explained in detail in the step by step videos tutorials...
