Using Dreamweaver Templates .DWT FilesDreamweaver Templates are an easy to use way to make websites that are very flexible. Basically, it works like this: You create a basic template for your website and add 'Editable Regions'. Once you save that template as a .dwt file, you can apply that template to plain HTML pages to create webpages with that template. If you want to change the look of the webpages created from that template later, you simply need to change the 1 template .DWT file, and all the other files are updated quickly. It is important to note that all of this takes place on your local computer...It is not like a PHP/SQL database driven site where the template resides on the web server...This is a simpler system, and is suitable even to beginners. I cover the use of .DWT templates in the Step by Step Training Videos. If you want to try it out briefly, heres how to do it. Open a new file in Dreamweaver and select HTML template. ![]() Create a table, maybe add a banner, and change the background color of the webpage (you can do whatever you want, but the point is, you are making a sample template) Next, add 2 editable regions to the template using: Insert > Template Objects > Editable Region ![]() Save the file as something like 'sample' and you'll see that it is automatically saved with the filename sample.dwt (the dwt is for DreamWeaver Template). Also, a new folder is automatically created called 'Templates' and this is where you sample.dwt template resides. Next, opening a regular HTML file (not a template file) and choose "Apply Template To Page" ![]() Type some text into the editable regions of this webpage and save it. Then go back to the sample.DWT template file and make some change to the appearance of the template and save it. You'll notice that when you save the changes to the template file, it will automaitcally update the second HTML file you created where you applied that template to the page. This works on a large scale whether you have 1 page or 100 pages that you have applied the DWT template to. If you have HTML pages that are created from a dwt template that are on your server and you make changes, the files will be updated on your local computer, and you will have to upload the new files and copy over the old ones on your server. It is easy once you understand it and can be a huge time saver and make your sites more flexible and easier to edit.
